Sweet Bird in the Backyard

I spotted, actually T spotted, a bird making a nest in the small Mango Tree at the back of the house. Everyday T has been glued to the window closest to the tree watching the activity.

I did a quick search online, but couldn't find a photograph of this smallish white bird with a black almond shape around her eyes. Anyone know what kind of bird this is?

  1. I wish I knew all the names of birds! But that's really well spotted!

  2. From the shape of the beak and the eyes, plus the location and messy nest, it looks like the yellow-vented bulbul (merbah kapur). They love to nest in gardens. I had one that nested on a hanging pot of Episcia cupreata, resulting in the poor plant not getting any water, else the nest gets flooded. The also love nesting on Dracaena surculosa, or even a mango tree. They have brown wings, whitish chest and the yellow vent (a clear identification feature, make sure they don't poop on you if you look straight up from below their vent :-p). They can raise their crest somewhat. Eggs usually two, though recently I spotted one with a third smaller egg at a school in Tg Karang, Selangor.

  3. Sean,

Thanks I think that might be it. The bird left the nest awhile ago, I dont think any eggs were laid there. I wonder if my cat constantly watching through the window and jumping under the tree when he was outside had anything to do with the departure!
