Kitchen

A Malaysia resident wrote and asked me for some current photos of the kitchen because he and his wife are embarking on a kitchen remodel at their home in Penang. So here are some photos.

A search of 'kitchen' on the right sidebar will provide you with links of all the posts of when ours was being designed and installed. We do love cooking in it and working together to prepare meals, there's enough space for us to move around and it's designed functionally. Our favorite part is perhaps the wood shelves where we put dishes out. I like to pull various dishes right from the ledge while cooking.

We are also very happy about the real Corian we spent the extra money on. It was a much better choice then marble because we didn't have to deal with seams.

The one thing we aren't thrilled about is the Stainless Steel table. While it looks fantastic and fills the space, it gets rusty if you don't wipe off the water. Actually all the stainless steel items (except the refrigerator which isn't really stainless steel but some kind of stainless looking material) get rusty if you don't keep them up. I never had this problem with my stainless steel appliances in New York.

  2. Yeah it is beautiful. But been wondering in light balance. Especially at night you need a clear light when cooking.

  4. Thanks everyone!

Alex- there are downlights, lights under the shelves and the big hanging light in the center of the table. We find that there is enough light for all times of the day and just switch on what is necessary. There is a nice light under the hood too, that lights up the stove while we cook. Actually, I think that is the most important light in there.

Malar, I thought Stainless does not rust either!!! That's why I thought it was used in commercial kitchens, etc. However, I find here that many of my stainless items rust when water is not wiped off. It happens for the malaysia made table, the Italian stove and also happens to my stainless steel Ikea products like the stainless soap dispensers and the stainless garbage cans. It's really annoying. But I found a stainless steel cleaner at Carrefour that wipes the rust away and shines the products pretty good.

    Best!

  5. Lovely kitchen K, the light is classy. Yeah, stainless steel will rust if come in contact with free iron (or anything that can remove the chromium oxide layer, chlorides included)

  6. Hi K,

    Love your kitchen. :)

Actually, there's many grade of stainless steel. 304,303,316 and etc. Some are more rust resistant that others but might not be suitable for food preparation.

For the really good stainless steel, it would cost a bomb because cutting it is very tough and takes long time.

Unfortunately, Malaysia's high humid doesn't help either. siigh...

  7. I just discovered your blog - my daughters and I spent the last three weeks touring through Peninsular Malaysia and Borneo. what a lovely country it is and the people are so friendly. Our very favourite food was the local ferns - wish I could grow them here in Australia. I love your kitchen!

Your kitchen looks fantastic, the blod too! I love what you did! The quartz countertop is amazing all of your research paid off. So you went with the Delonghi freestanding oven cooker, looks good and hopefully will be better than the Tuscani.

    Best,
